Signs that your wavy hair needs a hair cut

April 1, 2023 by Emily Evert 2 Comments

signs that your naturally wavy hair needs to be cut or trimmed

Signs That Your Wavy Hair Needs A Haircut

You can see or feel split ends.

Your hair has started tangling more than usual, especially at the ends, or in single-strand knots aka fairy knots.

Your hair feels heavy, and may give you headaches if you wear it up.

Your hair has gotten straighter or isn’t curling up as well as it used to.

The ends of your hair look stringy or have become uneven.

Your waves aren’t clumping as well as they used to or look “stringy”

It’s been more than 6 months since your last trim.

The shape that your haircut had when first cut is no longer the shape it has. For many with wavy hair they’ll get a “triangle” shape or their hair cut will become “bottom heavy” as it grows out.

How To Care For Thin Low Density Wavy Hair

March 24, 2023 by Emily Evert 3 Comments

What Is Low-Density Wavy Hair?

Hair density refers to how many hairs you have. Someone with low density hair would have fewer hairs per square inch of scalp than someone with medium or high density hair.

What’s The Difference Between Thin Wavy Hair and Fine Wavy Hair?

People often confuse thin hair, fine hair, and low-density hair! Thin hair and low-density hair mean the same thing. So thin hair means someone who has a lower amount of hairs across their scalp than “average”. Where fine wavy hair means that the individual hair strands are not as thick as ‘average’.

How To Tell If You Have Low-Density Hair

Hair density is primarily determined by analyzing how much of your scalp you can see. People with high-density hair can see very little of their scalp even when their hair is wet. People with low-density hair tend to have a wider/more visible part and can see more scalp when their hair is wet.

Another way to estimate your hair density is to look at your ponytail circumference. I have a blog post that goes into detail about how to determine your wavy hair type which covers density.

Does Wavy Hair Need A Leave In Conditioner? A Cream?

Does The Curly Girl Method Require A Leave-In Conditioner For Wavy Hair?

On my various curly girl method routine blog posts, I often get asked why I haven’t included a leave-in conditioner. Many people believe that the curly girl method requires a leave-in conditioner.

The Curly Girl Method does not require a leave-in conditioner for wavy-haired people.

The curly girl handbook encourages other curl types to leave some of their rinse-out conditioners in their hair (rather than using a store-bought leave-in conditioner) but it tells people with wavy hair to fully rinse the conditioner out.

Wavy hair and leave in conditioner. Should everyone with wavy hair use a leave in? Do you have to have one to comply with the curly girl method? What about curl creams? What are some leave in conditioners that aren't too heavy for wavy hair? How much should you use?

Why I Don’t Use a Leave-In Conditioner On My Wavy Hair

I very rarely use leave-in conditioners for wavy hair. For me, this isn’t because the curly girl method handbook says I don’t need to, as I don’t strictly follow the curly girl method.

My decision to skip over a leave-in conditioner came from experimenting with leave-in conditioners. Some leave-in conditioners leave my hair feeling greasy or weighed down. Others don’t leave my hair feeling bad or looking bad, but I just don’t see any obvious benefit from them, either.

Early on, I used a leave-in conditioner but when I’d skip using it, I either saw no difference or an improvement. The improvement would be a better cast, by the way. That’s why I quit using leave-in conditioners.

Easiest Curly Girl Method Routine For Beginners With Wavy Hair

August 29, 2021 by Emily Evert 2 Comments

Easiest Wavy Hair Routine

When you are first looking to start the curly girl method, it’s easy to get overwhelmed! I am over 3 years in now, and I still feel overwhelmed watching some people’s haircare routines. I don’t want to use 5+ products, I don’t want to be doing my hair for 2 hours on wash day, I don’t want to rotate through different products each wash day, etc.

I’m not happy with how my hair looks if I just wash, condition and air dry, though. I really enjoy using techniques that embrace my waves well, but the amount of time and money that I’m willing to invest is not endless.

I often see people say that they’re interested in trying the curly girl method or some other form of naturally wavy hair care, but they feel overwhelmed or like it’s too much work. I thought I’d share a recommended easy curly girl method beginners routine for wavy hair.

The goal with this is to provide enough products and routine to help you embrace your wavy hair, without it being overwhelming or time-consuming. I think this would an ideal curly girl method beginners routine, but it also could work for people who have some experience but are just looking for a lower maintenance routine.
