Wavy Hair Techniques – The Bowl Method, Smasters & Mousse Gel Mousse

July 29, 2022 by Emily Evert 1 Comment

I’m starting a new type of blog post. I have a long list of wavy hair techniques or styling methods that I’ve wanted to cover in a blog post in some way or another. I didn’t feel like making a whole blog post per method really made sense, though. I’ve decided to just do blog posts that cover three or so methods per post. This way I can cover all the techniques that I want to cover without making a ton of small blog posts.

3 wavy hair styling methods tested. Smasters, the bowl method and he mousse gel mousse technique.

The Bowl Method

I first heard about the bowl method a couple of years ago on Instagram, but @Curlyzia.xo has gone viral with her bowl method tiktoks so a lot of people will recognize it from there. I’ll embed one of her tiktoks here for those who haven’t seen it, it’s easier to grasp when you see it in video form I think.

Wavy hair Product Application Techniques Compared | Scruching, raking, roping, combing, glazing, prayer hands

May 19, 2022 by Emily Evert 5 Comments

“How do you apply your products?” is a question that I’ve received in comments and emails a few times. I’ve wanted to answer this question, but I thought it made sense to share different application techniques rather than making an entire blog post about one method. For the last few weeks I’ve been testing product application methods, so that I could compare them for you all.

How To Apply Products On Wavy Hair (Video)

While I’m sharing them here in written form with photos, I’ve also documented these with video. If you might find it easier to understand these application techniques by seeing me do them, check out my tiktok video or YouTube video that I made showing all six techniques and the results.

For the sake of trying to keep results ‘fair’, each wash day I washed my hair with the same shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner and mousse. I attempted to use the same amount of product, and the same routine and techniques other than how I applied the mousse each time. My goal was to try to make make it so that the only differences in these wash days was the product application technique. I prefer damp styling usually, so I plopped for 10 minutes each time and then added mousse.

Six methods for applying hair products to wavy hair explained and compared with results photos and video. Find out how to do scrunching, roping, raking, prayer hands, combing and glazing.

How To Scrunch Gel Into Wavy Hair

Scrunching is when you place your hands under your hair and raise your hands so tha your hair pools into your palms. Once you reach the top of your hair, you squeeze your hand closed, “scrunching” the hair that is in your palm. This is often done without product as a way of encouraging waves/curls to form. However, it can also be done as a product application technique.

How To Get Bigger Curl Clumps In Wavy Hair

March 6, 2022 by Emily Evert 3 Comments

For some people, the bigger curl clumps they can get, the better. We all have different styling preferences. The size of my curl clumps isn’t something I usually focus on a whole lot, personally. However, I know that it’s something other people do strive for so I thought I’d share this information for people who want bigger curl clumps.

How To Get Big Curl Clumps

The most important factor for getting bigger curl clumps is water. Focus on getting a lot of water into your hair and then lock the style in with gel to maintain those big curl clumps as your hair dries.

How To Take Care Of Fine Wavy Hair

September 12, 2021 by Emily Evert 13 Comments

A couple months ago I got a devacut on my wavy hair. It didn’t turn out like I had hoped…but I still benefitted from the experience. One of the best parts of the experience was that my stylist told me that I have fine hair.

I didn’t know this! I had previously believed that I had normal to thick hair strands, as that’s what results I got from a microscopic hair analysis test I did a couple of years ago.

While I would typically be inclined to believe the microscopic analysis over the stylist, when I thought about it, it made SO MUCH sense that my hair is fine rather than normal to thick. I had always thought that my hair didn’t behave the way that my hair type ‘should’. It makes way more sense that I just had my hair type wrong.

I often see others in wavy/curly communities recommend to newbies that they determine their hair type before they try to determine a hair routine that will work for them. I understand the logic behind this, but I also have found that it can be tricky to determine your hair type, which is why I don’t often give that advice myself.

However, I have now come up with a set of tests that I find to give the most accurate hair type results. So check out my post how to test your wavy hair type if you want to use my method for determining your hair type including porosity, density and thickness.

So first, I’ll share how to tell if you have fine hair and then I’ll go into what techniques or practices may work best for you if you have fine wavy hair.

How To Determine If Your Hair Is Fine

Take a single hair and place it between your thumb and index finger. When you look away from your hands, ask yourself if you can feel that hair. If you can’t really feel the hair, then your hair is fine!

I had heard about this test early on, and had initially thought my hair was fine. However, microscopic hair analysis told me that my hairs ranged from average to thick thickness, so I believed that for a long time. I now believe the hair analysis was incorrect, and the “finger test” and my hairstylist were correct.
