Gift Ideas For Wavy Curly Girls

November 16, 2021 by Emily Evert 4 Comments

You know someone who likes embracing their wavy hair, or who is following the curly girl method, and you want to get them a gift. What should you get?

Well, I’m here to share some ideas with you! First, a money-saving tip…

Saving Money On Wavy Hair Gifts

First, I want to share a really exciting way to save money when shopping for hair products online. If you aren’t already a Rakuten member, sign up using my link.

Rakuten is a mobile app and a browser extension that gives you cashback on your purchases. Most online retailers offer 2-10% back on anything you buy online while using Rakuten. I’ve used it for years to get cashback on my purchases on all sorts of different online retailers.

However, they also offer a signup bonus. They always offer at least $25 cashback when you sign up as a new member, but right now (mid Nov 2021) they’re offering $40! To qualify, you sign up with Rakuten, and make any online order that is $30 or more within the 90 days after you join.

For a purchase to qualify you just have to open the app before visiting the retailer and purchasing on mobile, or activate the Rakuten chrome extension before purchasing on PC. As long as you do that within 90 days of signing up under my link, they’ll give you the cashback bonus!

Wavy Hair Gift Guide

On this blog I usually only mention products that I personally have used and love. However, for this specific blog post I thought it would be helpful to see what most people with wavy hair really would like to get as gifts. Of course, I know what I would like to receive, but I am just one person.

I turned to one of my favorite wavy hair Facebook groups (wavy girl method – the wavy method international) to poll the community.

I listed some items that I thought a lot of wavies/curlies might want. I also told them that I’d love for them to add their own ideas if they wanted something that wasn’t already listed on the poll. It was set up so that people could vote for multiple items if they had more than one item on their wish list.

I’ll be honest, I was surprised by some of these results!

Trying The Manes By Mell Pigtail DIY HairCut On Loosely Wavy Hair

May 13, 2023 by Emily Evert 4 Comments

In the past I’ve written on this blog about how I saw a Devacut curl specialist and that experience wasn’t great. I also shared how I saw a second Devacut curl specialist who had more experience with wavy hair, and that experience was really good.

I haven’t yet talked about do it yourself haircuts! For the first couple years that I was following the curly girl method, I cut my own hair using a dry curl cut, curl by curl technique. I wrote about this on my blog EmilyReviews, before this blog existed. I used that technique several times but I never documented it with much detail because I wasn’t regularly blogging about my hair back then.

As someone who is naturally somewhat frugal, I love the idea of being able to cut my own hair. While I did really like the second curl specialist that I saw, I don’t love the price tag of those haircuts, at around $140.

DIY pigtail haircut at home haircut for wavy hair - how it did (and didn't!) work for me

I had considered trying a regular wet cut at a regular salon, even though I had a series of awful haircuts basically my whole life prior to age 24 or so, when I started embracing my waves. I think the main reason why wet cuts didn’t go as planned for me much of my life was due to not realizing that my hair was wavy and not understanding what techniques would and wouldn’t work sell on my hair type. So I think I could get a successful wet cut now…but I decided to try a new (to me) type of do it yourself haircut, instead. The pigtail haircut that Manes By Mell has a tutorial on. I’ll embed that video below.

How Humidity And Dew Point Impact How To Care For Wavy Hair

Why Does Humidity Cause Frizz?

When it’s humid, our hair absorbs water from the air. Of course, we all recognize that when we wet our styled hair by soaking it under the showerhead, this basically resets our style. When it’s really humid out, our hair will absorb water in different areas at different rates. The areas that absorb a lot of water will reset, while the areas of our hair that stay drier may not. This is why our hair can end up frizzy, losing its curl clumps, falling flatter/straighter and just looking more messy.

Is All Wavy Hair Sensitive To Humidity?

Not necessarily. Higher porosity hair is more likely to frizz up in humidity because it will take in water more easily, and has a raised or even damaged cuticle which can make it more prone to not staying sleekly clumped with nearby hairs.

How Does Dew Point Impact Hair?

It’s commonly understood that some people’s hair gets frizzier or curlier looking when it’s humid. Dew point isn’t nearly as commonly discussed, but it’s actually a bigger factor in how your hair is impacted by the weather than humidity is.

Dew point fluctuates depending on different factors, and a high dew point is 60 Fahrenheit or higher, and a low dew point is 35 Fahrenheit or lower. The “sweet spot” for dew point is in between those two.

How To Plop Your Wavy Hair – Step By Step Guide With Photos

November 24, 2020 by Emily Evert 34 Comments

“What does ‘plop’ mean?”

This was my first-ever comment on this blog. I immediately thought, oh my gosh, I have to do a post about that! It’s a strange term, and something that I am sure literally every person with wavy or curly hair has asked before, if they have come across it.

It’s a made-up word, so of course we all have to learn what it means. I just am so used to the curly girl method communities that I take part in, that I had to be reminded to go back to the basics!

So, this post is for those of you who are new and wondering what the heck plopping is!

What is plopping hair?

Plopping your hair means to wrap your wet hair in a cotton t-shirt in a way that preserves your natural curl pattern. The goal is to allow your hair to dry (partially or all the way) while holding onto its natural pattern, and keep it from being stretched out.

Typically plopping is done after showering when hair is wet. For many with naturally wavy hair, our hair will be really wavy while in the shower. However, if we just step out of the shower and do nothing else, our waves may flatten quite a bit, especially towards the roots of our hair.

In some cases, it may flatten so much that it looks straight – especially if we brush or comb our hair, too. This happens because the weight of the water in our hair can weigh down our hair before it has a chance to dry. The weight of our hair pulls from the roots down, which is why the roots can be flattest.

So, plopping is something that we do to try to reduce this effect, and keep our curl pattern from being stretched out while it begins to dry.
