Do I Have To Use Gel To Embrace My Wavy Hair or Do CGM?

February 2, 2021 by Emily Evert 13 Comments

I Used To Cringe At The Thought Of Using Gel

I remember when I first started to consider trying the curly girl method, the thing that I was most hesitant about was gel.

I had always just used shampoo and conditioner. The only time I used anything else was for formal events like weddings, where I had an updo that I was trying to preserve. I didn’t like that hair-sprayed feeling.

In my teens when I realized that my flat iron was damaging my hair and I decided to start using a heat-protecting spray, I tried a few varieties before I found one I could live with. I didn’t want my hair to feel like it had any products in it.

I was born in the early 90’s and have a lot of older siblings. I remember some of my older brothers using blue or green gel in their hair in the late 90’s or early 00’s to make their hair hard and “spikey”. Hair gel was something I associated with wet-looking, stiff hair. I didn’t want my hair to look wet or feel stiff.

So when I started looking up curly girl method routines and finding that almost every routine included gel…I was disheartened. For some reason, it didn’t immediately occur to me that these people I was watching clearly had hair that wasn’t wet-looking or stiff, so it probably didn’t feel super yucky either.

I tried to skip gel, at first. I just tried to not brush my hair and let it dry to see what it would do.

Naturally Wavy Hair Care May Not Be Right For You If…

signs that the curly girl method (or other types of natural wavy hair care) may NOT be right for you. #curlygirlmethod

Signs that the curly girl method may not be right for you…

Just for clarity, what I’m primarily talking about here is using natural products to embrace your natural wavy/curly hair. Not necessarily the super strict version of the curly girl method. Check out my blog post on how the internet taught me that CGM was something different from the true curly girl method. 🙂

What do I do with my hair after wash day?

Wash day is going okay, but when I wake up the next day my hair is a mess. What do I do?

How can I revive my curls in the morning?

I’ve gotten a variety of emails and comments essentially asking the same thing. Refreshing is something I don’t love doing, personally. I find that it can be one of the harder aspects of managing wavy hair. So, I totally get why people have questions and want help when it comes to reviving their curls on non-wash days by refreshing.

In the past, I wrote about refreshing my hair a couple of different ways. I have a post titled how to refresh wavy hair with just water, and how to refresh wavy hair with mousse. I realized that it wasn’t as complete as it could have been. The last couple of weeks I’ve been working to compare different methods for refreshing wavy hair.

Target Curly Girl Method Starter Kit For Wavy Hair

If you have wavy hair and are looking to start the curly girl method by purchasing everything you need at a Target or Target.com, this post is for you!

My Walmart curly girl method starter routine & starter kit post has been pretty popular. I thought others were likely to prefer Target over Walmart, so I’d do a Target one too. I may eventually make more for Ulta and other stores. Let me know if you guys are interested in posts like this for other retailers and I’ll add them to my blog post ideas list.

My goal with this starter kit is to give you everything you’ll need to get started on the curly girl method with wavy hair. With the Walmart set, I really tried to go as cheap as possible. With this one, I’m still being price-conscious, but I’m recommending some products that are a few dollars more, that I think are well worth the extra money.
