Do I Have To Use Gel To Embrace My Wavy Hair or Do CGM?

February 2, 2021 by Emily Evert 13 Comments

I Used To Cringe At The Thought Of Using Gel

I remember when I first started to consider trying the curly girl method, the thing that I was most hesitant about was gel.

I had always just used shampoo and conditioner. The only time I used anything else was for formal events like weddings, where I had an updo that I was trying to preserve. I didn’t like that hair-sprayed feeling.

In my teens when I realized that my flat iron was damaging my hair and I decided to start using a heat-protecting spray, I tried a few varieties before I found one I could live with. I didn’t want my hair to feel like it had any products in it.

I was born in the early 90’s and have a lot of older siblings. I remember some of my older brothers using blue or green gel in their hair in the late 90’s or early 00’s to make their hair hard and “spikey”. Hair gel was something I associated with wet-looking, stiff hair. I didn’t want my hair to look wet or feel stiff.

So when I started looking up curly girl method routines and finding that almost every routine included gel…I was disheartened. For some reason, it didn’t immediately occur to me that these people I was watching clearly had hair that wasn’t wet-looking or stiff, so it probably didn’t feel super yucky either.

I tried to skip gel, at first. I just tried to not brush my hair and let it dry to see what it would do.

The Best Way To Refresh Wavy Hair – 8 Ways Compared W/ Pics

What do I do with my hair after wash day?

Wash day is going okay, but when I wake up the next day my hair is a mess. What do I do?

How can I revive my curls in the morning?

I’ve gotten a variety of emails and comments essentially asking the same thing. Refreshing is something I don’t love doing, personally. I find that it can be one of the harder aspects of managing wavy hair. So, I totally get why people have questions and want help when it comes to reviving their curls on non-wash days by refreshing.

In the past, I wrote about refreshing my hair a couple of different ways. I have a post titled how to refresh wavy hair with just water, and how to refresh wavy hair with mousse. I realized that it wasn’t as complete as it could have been. The last couple of weeks I’ve been working to compare different methods for refreshing wavy hair.

How To Fix Frizzy Wavy Hair

February 17, 2021 by Emily Evert 5 Comments

In my last post I talked about what causes frizzy wavy hair. There are lots of potential causes and understanding them can be really helpful so I recommend reading that. Thankfully, there are lots of potential fixes, too! If you can pin down what is causing your frizz, that is likely to help you choose the right way of getting rid of frizzy hair.

I always use my own personal photos in all of my blog posts, so I’m going to do that in this blog post as well. I feel like I should post a bit of a disclaimer in this particular post. Fighting frizz is not one of my highest priorities when making my hair routine. I am okay with some frizz. I find that I have to accept a little more frizz to get the volume that I want.

Some of these techniques I do follow, but others I don’t, because they contradict other methods I could use to get more volume. Anyway, so my disclaimer is that I don’t follow all of these all of the time, personally.

Still, I have seen a dramatic improvement in the amount of frizz that I have over time, thanks to the method that I do implement. So, you don’t necessarily have to do all of these to see improvement over time.

I plan to do some routine blog posts eventually and in those you’ll be able to see what techniques I do and don’t utilize if my personal hair care methods are of interest to you.

How To Diffuse Wavy Hair 4 Ways: Step By Step With Pictures

How To Diffuse Wavy Hair

I diffuse my hair every single wash day. For me, air-drying just isn’t practical because it literally would take all day. Diffusing is a way of blow drying your hair without disrupting your curls, and without heat damage.

Diffuser attachments for blow dryers basically just disperse the air so that it comes out from several smaller sources rather than the entire barrel of the end of a blow dryer.

For many people, diffusing can help your curls to dry in a tighter pattern, by drying your hair quicker, before it has a chance for the water in your hair to weigh down your pattern.

I have a whole post on air drying vs diffusing wavy hair already. So I’ll cut to just talking about diffusing!

How do you diffuse wavy hair? Well, there are multiple techniques. I’ve prepared to cover four of the ways that I’ve seen discussed most often. The first diffusing tutorial I ever watched was pixie diffusing so that became my default and it’s what I usually do, still. I did find benefits to some other diffusing techniques though, so I may change it up in the future!

For those who may be curious, my blow dryer is the Revlon Pro Collection IONIC Hair Dryer (available through Walmart) and my diffuser attachment is the Xtava black orchid from Amazon.

I bought both of them nearly 3 years ago and they’ve held up great. The diffuser comes with a ring in the base that you can remove to make the opening slightly wider. You have to do that to get the diffuser to fit on the dryer I have, but it’s a perfect fit once you take out that removable ring.Continue Reading
