Meijer Curly Girl Method Starter Kit For Wavy Hair

March 2, 2022 by Emily Evert 1 Comment

Meijer curly girl method starter kit

I’ve done a few CGM starter kits for different retailers, and they’ve been fairly popular so I thought I’d occasionally add in new ones. This time, I’m doing a Meijer curly girl method starter kit!

The town I live in has two grocery stores, a Walmart and a Meijer. I prefer Meijer (or “Meijers”, as most of us here in Michigan say!) so when I was first looking to start the curly girl method, I headed to Meijers to see what I could find that was curly girl approved. I stood in the hair care aisle for a long time, and came home with a gel that didn’t end up being curly girl approved.

So, in an attempt to stop you from the same situation, here is a starter kit!

Pick up at least these four products:

  • Suave daily clarifying shampoo
  • Pacifica curls Shampoo
  • Pacifica curls Conditioner
  • Twist weather up weightless curl defining gel

If your hair is really prone to tangles, feels really dry or looks really dull, or you just aren’t on too tight f a budget, I’d recommend also buying a Garnier Fructis Treat deep conditioner. These are 3-in-1 products so you can use a small amount as a leave-in conditioner if your hair gets tangled between washes, or you can just use it as a deep conditioner periodically to help your hair get softer and more moisturized over time.

Cheap Wavy Hair Products That Have Worked Well For Me

If you have wavy hair and are frugal, or are just mindful of your budget, it is easy to be shocked at what some wavy hair products cost. Early on, I remember wondering if I had to buy $30 conditioner if I wanted really good results.  At the time I thought, if I have to spend that much money, this just isn’t for me.

These days, I am more open to spending a little money on my hair than I was in the beginning. Still, I’m not someone who is of the mindset that drugstore wavy hair products can’t work well. I know from experience that some affordable hair products work great! Are professional hair products better? I can’t answer that, but I get results that I am satisfied with on a budget.

Someday, I’d like to try more expensive products and even to learn more about the science behind ingredients in higher-end hair care products and how they may differ from cheaper ingredients. While I don’t currently have all that knowledge, I do have the experience that has shown me that some affordable hair care products can provide results that meet my expectations.

On this website, I’ve intentionally spent more time writing blog posts talking about technique. I try to write a lot about technique because I think too many people expect products to be the primary answer for getting the hair style results they want. I’ve found that technique is really the most important thing.

I even put it to the test by comparing using “bad” products with “good” techniques, vs using “bad” techniques but “good products”. The difference was huge! You can see that in my post Do Wavy Hair Techniques or products matter most? I do think products matter too though.

Should I Use Mousse or Gel On Wavy Hair?

Does mousse or gel work better on wavy hair?

Mousse and gel are both good styling product options for wavy hair. Which you want will primarily come down to your style preferences. If you want frizz-free, well-defined waves, try gel on wet hair. If you want big volume, go for mousse on damp hair.

When I first found the curly girl method a few years ago, I thought gel was the go-to styling product that had hold. I didn’t really hear much about mousse at the time. I was following a lot more curly-haired channels than wavy, at the time. It seems like gel is the most common choice for people with curly hair.

In the last year or so as I’ve found a few wavy-specific communities, I’ve noticed mousse is mentioned a  lot more than it is in curly circles.

When I started embracing my waves in 2018, I bought LA looks gel. It took a little while to figure out exactly how to best use it. I wasn’t able to get a cast for a while, and once I did get a cast, I realized it improved my results quite a bit.

If you’re new to the idea of a cast, check out my post what is a gel cast and how to get one. I did try mousse once early on, a random old bottle we had laying around in the bathroom that wasn’t CG approved. It didn’t seem to give me any hold at all, my hair turned out terribly and I didn’t bother to try mousse again for a long time.

About a year ago I gave mousse another try…I don’t really even remember why. I’m so glad I did though, because I was able to get a cast with the mousse, and I really liked my results! I have primarily been using mousse ever since then.

In the fall I tested out 10 types of mousse, tracking my results for 3 days each, and did a comparison blog post. Check out my Best Mousse For Wavy Hair post to see it. I did another comparison blog posts, for gels. Check out my best gels for wavy hair blog post to see that. I also have a wavy hair product recommendations post sharing my top favorites of gel and mousse.

My Favorite Mousses – NYM Curl Talk Vs Cake Mousse Review

March 7, 2021 by Emily Evert 3 Comments

There are affiliate links in this post. I don’t have any relationship with either of these brands, I bought these products on my own.

If you’ve read multiple of my blog posts, you likely already know that I tend to come down heavily on the ‘mousse’ side when deciding between mousse or gel for my wavy hair. You probably have also seen me mention Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Mousse several times.

It’s bee my favorite mousse for a long time. I even did an experiment trying out 9 other mousses and doing a 10 mousse comparison blog post– and still didn’t find any that I liked more than the NYM curl talk.

Early this year I tried Cake brand mousse for the first time. I’ve since updated that mousse comparison post to include a blurb about Cake mousse, too.

Since trying the CAke mousse, I’ve found myself reaching for the Cake mousse about as often as I reach for the NYM Curl Talk. I’d be really hard-pressed to say either is my #1 favorite, anymore. It feels a little unfair to compare them, even, because of how they have different pros and cons.

So, I thought I’d sort of review both and then do a compare and contrast to explain why I like these two mousses even though they are quite different!Continue Reading
