CVS Drugstore Curly Girl Method For Wavy Hair

If you’re looking to start the curly girl method, it’s easy to get overwhelmed quickly! There are so many product options, and routine options.  often advise people to just jump in, rather than trying to make all the ‘perfect’ choices for your hair type from the get-go. Most of us will end up changing products and techniques as we go along and experiment with our hair.

With that in mind, I think it makes sense to start with affordable products. There are some really nice, really expensive curly girl approved products out there. You may decide that they’re worth the cost someday. When you’re new and just learning about your hair, I think it makes sense to stick with drugstore products until you get a better sense of what your hair does and doesn’t like.

This post is a CVS drugstore curly girl method starter kit for wavy hair. If you’re looking to start the curly girl method by shopping at CVS, this post has you covered!

To get started with the CGM at CVS I’d recommend buying the following:

  • Suave daily clarifying shampoo
  • Eva NYC mane magic 10-in-1 shampoo
  • Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Masque
  • Tresemme mega control hair gel level 5.

My total cost was $27 and change, but one item was on sale and I had $2 extra care bucks. At full price it would have bee around $32.

Wavy Curly Girl Method Starter Kit From Amazon {& Routine}

Under $30 amazon curly girl method routine for wavy hair

When I started the curly girl method four years ago, I was really excited to get started. I initially thought I would order products on Amazon instead of waiting to go to the store. That is, until I looked up the products I wanted to buy on Amazon and realized they were more than twice the price that they would cost in store!

It’s common for hair care products to be overpriced online because they’re expensive to ship, due to being heavy for their size. For example, a $5 bottle for shampoo might cost $5 to ship.

Anyway. I’ve since learned that you can get good deals when shopping for wavy or curly hair products on Amazon, but you have to be selective about what you order.

For example, I often recommend LA looks gel to newbies. The reason why I recommend it is because it’s a good gel at a great price, just $2 at any of the local stores in my area.

On Amazon it’s $9. Similarly, I often recommend Suave daily clarifying shampoo because it’s a good clarifying shampoo and it’s just $1 for a regular bottle or $2 for a huge bottle locally. On Amazon the regular bottle is $9.45!

Anyway, I thought I’d pull together a starter wavy hair routine for those interested in starting the curly girl method and wanting to order from Amazon. I’ve specifically looked up products that are to overpriced on Amazon vs in store. These are all products that I’ve personally used and have been happy with.

Starting The Curly Girl Method With Products From Amazon

My recommendations:

Neutrogena anti-residue shampoo (for removing build-up 1-2 times per month) ($5.29 on Amazon)

Pacifica Beauty Salty Waves Texturizing shampoo (for regular wash day use) ($9.99 on Amazon). This shampoo is on the stronger side while still being curly girl approved.

Pacifica pineapple curls conditioner is $8.09 on Amazon. The conditioner has nice slip, and isn’t too heavy.

Garnier Pure Clean Gel ($3.42 on Amazon)

If you are just looking for the basics to get started, those four products are all you absolutely need.

Day 2 Wavy Hair Routine: How To Refresh With Mousse

March 6, 2021 by Emily Evert 9 Comments

I recently updated my 10 mousses compared on my wavy hair blog post to include another mousse. In the past, my go-to solution for day 2 hair has been to get wavy hair to last longer by just getting really hard hold on wash day, to avoid refreshing. With a new mousse that I’ve been using lately (Cake mousse) I’ve found refreshing to give me decent results.

For me, the key to refreshing with mousse without your hair feeling really producty, is using a mousse that is really light so that you can use it on wash day, and add more in to refresh the next day without your hair feeling heavy, “producty”, sticky, weighed down, etc. For me, Cake Mousse has been that mousse!

Meijer Curly Girl Method Starter Kit For Wavy Hair

Meijer curly girl method starter kit

I’ve done a few CGM starter kits for different retailers, and they’ve been fairly popular so I thought I’d occasionally add in new ones. This time, I’m doing a Meijer curly girl method starter kit!

The town I live in has two grocery stores, a Walmart and a Meijer. I prefer Meijer (or “Meijers”, as most of us here in Michigan say!) so when I was first looking to start the curly girl method, I headed to Meijers to see what I could find that was curly girl approved. I stood in the hair care aisle for a long time, and came home with a gel that didn’t end up being curly girl approved.

So, in an attempt to stop you from the same situation, here is a starter kit!

Meijer Curly Girl Method Starter Kit

Pick up at least these four products:

  • Suave daily clarifying shampoo
  • Pacifica curls Shampoo
  • Pacifica curls Conditioner
  • Twist weather up weightless curl defining gel

If your hair is really prone to tangles, feels really dry or looks really dull, or you just aren’t on too tight f a budget, I’d recommend also buying a Garnier Fructis Treat deep conditioner. These are 3-in-1 products so you can use a small amount as a leave-in conditioner if your hair gets tangled between washes, or you can just use it as a deep conditioner periodically to help your hair get softer and more moisturized over time.
