How To Fix Frizzy Wavy Hair

February 17, 2021 by Emily Evert 5 Comments

In my last post I talked about what causes frizzy wavy hair. There are lots of potential causes and understanding them can be really helpful so I recommend reading that. Thankfully, there are lots of potential fixes, too! If you can pin down what is causing your frizz, that is likely to help you choose the right way of getting rid of frizzy hair.

I always use my own personal photos in all of my blog posts, so I’m going to do that in this blog post as well. I feel like I should post a bit of a disclaimer in this particular post. Fighting frizz is not one of my highest priorities when making my hair routine. I am okay with some frizz. I find that I have to accept a little more frizz to get the volume that I want.

Some of these techniques I do follow, but others I don’t, because they contradict other methods I could use to get more volume. Anyway, so my disclaimer is that I don’t follow all of these all of the time, personally.

Still, I have seen a dramatic improvement in the amount of frizz that I have over time, thanks to the method that I do implement. So, you don’t necessarily have to do all of these to see improvement over time.

I plan to do some routine blog posts eventually and in those you’ll be able to see what techniques I do and don’t utilize if my personal hair care methods are of interest to you.

Why You Aren’t Getting A Gel Cast

February 22, 2021 by Emily Evert 12 Comments

Do you need a hair cast?

If your waves don’t last very long, get frizzy, or fall flat without a cast, then you may need to get a cast to change those results. However, if your hair gives you results you like without a gel cast, there is no reason you need one!

Some people with wavy hair have a rather delicate pattern that doesn’t support itself very well. These people are likely to benefit greatly from getting a gel cast (or mousse cast).

Others with wavy hair have a really durable pattern, so they can just wash their hair, have lovely waves that last for days without gel at all. It can really vary. If you are happy with your hair and haven’t got a cast before, no need to worry about it.

If you are looking to change your hair in almost any way, whether it’s getting your hair to last longer, getting it to stay tighter, reducing frizz, or improving definition – these are all likely to be improved if you get a gel cast.

For me, getting my waves to last long-term is dramatically improved by getting a gel cast. Most of my post how to get wavy hair to last longer is focused on getting a cast for that reason. In general, I’d say that getting a cast is one of the biggest changes I made to my hair when trying to embrace my waves. So, it’s a big deal – or can be, at least.

For these reasons, if you aren’t happy with your hair and haven’t got a cast, I’d encourage you to try getting one and see how it changes things. It certainly is not required though.

There are definitely plenty of people with wavy hair wh don’t get a gel cast and get good results. For example, Swavy Curly Courtney (a popular wavy-haired youtuber) says she rarely gets a cast. Clearly, her hair is gorgeous. Without a cast, my hair will fall flat before wash day is over. With a cast, I can get 3-4 days of waves. So, everyone is different.

My Favorite Mousses – NYM Curl Talk Vs Cake Mousse Review

March 7, 2021 by Emily Evert 3 Comments

There are affiliate links in this post. I don’t have any relationship with either of these brands, I bought these products on my own.

If you’ve read multiple of my blog posts, you likely already know that I tend to come down heavily on the ‘mousse’ side when deciding between mousse or gel for my wavy hair. You probably have also seen me mention Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Mousse several times.

It’s bee my favorite mousse for a long time. I even did an experiment trying out 9 other mousses and doing a 10 mousse comparison blog post– and still didn’t find any that I liked more than the NYM curl talk.

Early this year I tried Cake brand mousse for the first time. I’ve since updated that mousse comparison post to include a blurb about Cake mousse, too.

Since trying the CAke mousse, I’ve found myself reaching for the Cake mousse about as often as I reach for the NYM Curl Talk. I’d be really hard-pressed to say either is my #1 favorite, anymore. It feels a little unfair to compare them, even, because of how they have different pros and cons.

So, I thought I’d sort of review both and then do a compare and contrast to explain why I like these two mousses even though they are quite different!Continue Reading

My curly girl method wavy hair routine | Spring 2021

March 14, 2021 by Emily Evert 1 Comment

There are affiliate links in this post.

I’ve shared a Walmart wavy hair starter routine but that’s really the only routine blog post I’ve posted so far. It feels a little funny to share any detailed routine and say it is my routine because I am always changing my routine. I’ve always changed things up frequently, just for the sake of experimenting with and learning about my hair.

Since starting this blog I am experimenting more than ever. So, I rarely do the exact same routine twice. At the moment I am diffusing my hair a different way each time so that I can do a blog post sharing different diffuse techniques and results. I just am always working on something or another for the blog that impacts my hair routine it seems.

However, I do have “default” or go-to products and techniques in most areas of my routine. I typically only change up one thing at a time, and will keep the others set at these defaults, more or less. So this is going to basically combine all of my go-tos or all of my ‘defaults’ for my routine at the moment.
